How I enjoyed my stay at our cozy cabin right on Lake Yellowstone! Built in the 1920s (with extensive remodeling completed in 2004), these comfortable duplex cabins clustered near the historic Lake Yellowstone Hotel are open May to October. By chance, our arrival on 17 May (as part of my Great Parks Northern Road Trip) was just a day after their 2008 opening. Although temperatures were in the low 60s during the day, plenty of snow still covered the ground, and I was most pleased the cabin’s heater was working after nightfall (unlike the sink, which had a leaky pipe that caused a wet floor for which I was – initially – most unjustly blamed by a certain Publisher).
Since cooking is prohibited in all cabins and rooms, my People set out a tasty picnic supper the evening we arrived and treated us all to a hot take-out breakfast from the hotel dining room the following morning (carefully packed by a friendly employee for transport back to the cabin). As with all the park’s lodgings, the cabins have no televisions, radios, air conditioning, or Internet hook-ups. The hotel’s gift shop features a sizeable selection of interesting fiction and non-fiction books related to Yellowstone and the West for those running low on good reading material!
We writer types can truly appreciate how nice this peaceful spot would be for a working vacation! I can just picture myself on a future visit: With everyone else off exploring, there my Editor and I would sit, no cell phones or e-mails for distraction, just a simple desk with a view and the occasional bison wandering down the street.
