I´d like to introduce you to Curley – my newest furry friend just waiting to find his “forever home”!
This adorable three-year-old poodle mix is just one of hundreds of homeless pets that have been helped by my very favorite charity, SPARE (Save Pound Animals thru Rescue and Education), an all-volunteer group based in Carson, California, and founded 20 years ago by my friend Karen Welch, with whom I'm pictured here. When this friendly fellow was found running the streets of Long Beach, he was nothing but skin and bones and fleas. As you can see, he now sports a dandy hairdo and is as healthy as can be.
If you live in the greater Los Angeles area and would like more information about adopting Curley, please submit the form below. If you´re not in the area, or aren´t ready to adopt today, you can still help SPARE´s abandoned animals in several ways. Curley and his fellow orphans always need:
- Blankets and towels
These need not be new. Well-worn and snuggly are just fine.
- Canned pet food
Members of SPARE´s geriatric crowd with few or no teeth truly appreciate soft, canned food. The puppies and kittens do, too.
- Empty print cartridges and old cell phones
Well, Curley and Co. don´t actually use the phones and ink themselves (not being world-famous canine authors). But SPARE´s recycling program has been a huge success in terms of funds raised for the animals.
- Cash donations
SPARE is a 501(c)(3) organization. If you write “Chaucer´s Friend” in the memo line of your check,
The Armarium Press will match your donation up to $100.00. Send your check to:
